Rs.3 Cr cash tumbles out from car involved in accident

Chennai, Jan 8, 2015: Bundles of currency consisting of Rs. 500 notes and running into Rs.3 Cr tumbled out of a vehicle involved in accident on Salem-Kochi highway near Coimbatore on Wednesday. A Tamil Nadu Government bus and an Innova car were involved in a head-on collision at Podipalyam on the highway early Wednesday morning. The front portion of the car was fully damaged and the driver along with two other persons sitting in the car were seriously injured. When the driver of the Government bus and its passengers came down , they were stunned to see the currency bundles strewn all over near the area. The currency bundles flowed out from the car obviously under the impact of the accident. The worried driver and passengers immediately called the police who arrived with in minutes and were stunned to see the currency bundles in every nook and corner of the car. Police said the original seats were removed and replaced with the currency bundles. They immediately called the IT officials who rushed to the spot and seized the amount. The seized amount totaled to Rs.2.55 Cr. However, before the police and IT officials arrived, several people residing nearby came with bags and collected some bundles and ran away. Police said when added, the total amount runs into Rs. 3 Cr. The injured persons , who are being treated in a hospital, told police that Railway catering contractor Mustafa of Erode gave them the money and asked them to hand it over to some persons in his native village. The injured were identified as Jalil and Yasar Abutakar. Police said while the driver is battling for life, the other two were out of danger. Police are suspecting that the money was being supplied to terrorists and have begun investigation from that angle.
