Govts maligning judges, a new trend: CJI Ramana

While hearing a petition against an order of the Chhattisgarh High Court, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) N.V. Ramana said that a new and unfortunate trend of governments maligning the judges has started if the judgements were not in their favour.

The bench headed by CJI also comprised Justice Krishna Murari and Justice Hima Kohli. The Chhattisgarh High Court had struck down an FIR registered against senior IAS officer Aman Singh and his wife Yasmin Singh under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Aman had served as principal secretary to former Chief Minister Raman Singh.

The CJI made these remarks after Rakesh Dwivedi, who is representing the Congress government in Chhattisgarh, has made allegations against the judiciary for quashing the FIR against Aman Singh. “It is not right to malign the courts,” the CJI stated. Responding to Ramana’s remarks, Rakesh stated that he is not highlighting judiciary was wrong in his argument.
