AP govt issues show cause notice to suspended DGP-ranked IPS officer AB Venkateswara Rao

The Andhra Pradesh government served a show cause notice to former intelligence chief and suspended IPS officer AB Venkateswara Rao for holding a press meet on March 21 this year without taking prior permission from the concerned authorities.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had announced in the Legislative Assembly that TDP national president N Chandrababu Naidu, when he was chief minister from 2014 to 2019, had purchased Israeli’s Pegasus spyware used for tapping mobiles and landline phones of high-profile personalities. Venkateswara Rao had conducted a press meet and condemned Mamata’s comments. He further stated that wrong information was given to Mamata.

In the show cause notice, the AP government alleged that the DGP-ranked officer had violated Rule 6 of the All India Services Conduct Rules 1968. The state government warned of initiating action against him if he fails to give explanation within one week from the date of receiving show cause notice.
