'Vardah' Means 'Red Rose'
New Delhi : Cyclone 'Vardha' making landfall in Andhra Pradesh coast and Tamil Nadu regions. Both the coastal states has been taking a series of precautionary measures in order to mitigate the impact.

The name for the present cyclone was given by Pakistan. 'Vardah' means 'Red Rose'. Names for the cycolnes in the IOC(Indian Ocean Region) would be decided by the member countries which include India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Maldives,Myanmar,Thailand and Oman.

The IMD (Indian Meteorological Department) which issues cyclone advisors to the 8 member countries, has a long list of names contributed by each country.

When ever cyclone occurs, a name from the list would be picked in the order that are submitted already. Every country gets an opportunity to name a cyclone. After all the member countries get their turn, IMD will follow next list of names.

IMD opines that tropical cyclones are named in order to provide hassle free communication between the forecasters. So that people can easily understand the warnings and forecasts. The last cyclone which hit Chennai was 'Nada', this name was suggested by Oman.
