Rohith Vemula committed suicide because of his personal frustrations, commission concluded
The Justice Roopanwal Commission completed inquiry on the mysterious suicide of dubbed Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula. Ministry of Human Resource Development ordered probe into the death of Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula suicide that shook the entire nation. Protests erupted demanding the suspension of university Vice Chancellor Appa Rao. Student unions alleged that Union Ministers Smriti Irani and Bandaru Dattatreya for their involvement in university affairs.
Roopanwal commission has given clean chit to Union Ministers Smriti Irani and Bandaru Dattatreya. The commission has also confirmed that the university Vice Chancellor is not working on political pressure. It has raised doubts regarding the caste of Rohith Vemula. There is no evidence to establish Rohith’s mother belongs to SC(Mala) community. They doubted that she might have enrolled into the community because of the benefits. Rohith’s mother raised by adopting parents and they never revealed details regarding her parents leaving her without knowing their caste.
Finally, the report concluded that Rohith Vemula committed suicide because of his personal frustrations. The commission emphasised to have grievance redressal mechanisms, counselling and equal opportunity cells to avoid unfortunate incidents like this.
