Indo-US Project X to produce safe energy thro N-reactors
Indian and American scientists are engaged in Project X that will use nuclear reactors to produce green electricity. A team of scientists from the famed Fermilab in the US and India's Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Mumbai are collaborating on the carbon-free project to produce energy. Costing $1 billion, it will produce the first components by 2023.
Fermilab, of the US government, is known for world's top-of-the-line accelerators that send fundamental particles at high speeds of light in a controlled fusion.
The hallmark of the reactor is controlled systems. The accelerators are stoppable unlike the nuclear reactors in Chernobyl in Russia and Fukushima in Japan that spewed radiation.
"They are very safe, since you can turn off the accelerator and everything simply just turns off," Dr Nigel Lockyer, Director, Fermilab, Chicago USA ,told NDTV.
