Telangana to have 24 districts by Dasara, says KCR

Telangana will soon have 24 districts and 74 mandals by Dasara, according to Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao. On an average, each district is expected to eventually have 20 mandals. Addressing a meeting arranged for the TRS parlaiementary party and legislature party at HICC on Wednesday, the Chief Minister said the smaller districts were being carved out for the purpose of administrative ease and governance only. Earlier, a number of TRS leaders gave their views on increasing the number of districts. KCR said with the increase in the number of districts, the adminsitration would find it easier to meet the people's needs. He pointed out that only Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal had not increased the number of districts in the country. Because of the fault, Central funds were not forthcoming to these States. With new districts, more central universities would be set up in the State. The higher the urban population, the more the chances of a town becoming a city, he added. There was a possibility that an urban constituency might spill into two or more districrts. Each district headquarter should become the centre of growth. KCR told his party leaders not to bother about criticism from the opposition for the expansion move.
