Main accused in the Godhra carnage held

The main accused, ex-muncipal councillor Faroq Bana, in the 2002 Godhra rail carnage in which 60 Ram Sevaks returning from Ayodhya were burnt alive was arrested after 12 years of search at Kalol-naka in Ahmedabad on Wednesday morning. Faroq Bana was Accused 1 in the burning of the Sabarmati Express, as a result of which Ram sevaks retruning home were burnt alive in Godhra. The riots that resulted from Faroq Bana's carnage resulted in a toll of 1000 lives in Gujarat. Anti-social forces had a free play in the State after the incident. Post-Godhra became a popular phrase with them, forgetting the Godhra incident. Thirty-one accused had been convicted in the Godhra incident. Of them 11 were given death sentence, and the rest were given life sentence. The Gujarat Anti-terrorism Squad arrested Faroq Bana. He would be interrogated by the squad before being presented before the court.
