SC clarifies on limits to lampooning
The Supreme Court on Friday clarified that there were limits to lampooning. The court was considering an appeal to reconsider the two-year sentence under Sections 499 & 500. It said the Defamation Act was all right.
The court was going into appeals filed separately by opposite poles, Rahul Gandhi, Subramaniam Swamy and Arvind Kejriwal.
The Judges comprised Prapulla C Pant and Deepak Mishra.
The court reiterated that there were limits to the lampooning under the defamation law. If summons were issued in a defamation suit, one could appeal to the High Court within 8 weeks. During this period, there will be protection for them.
