Guntur-Praksam people fight over Krishna water
The Krishna waters dispute has now worn a local look. It's not a fight between Andhra and Telangana or Telangana and Karnataka. Now the fight is raging between the brothers of Guntur and Prakasam districts over the Krishna right-canal water release.
The Nagarjunasagar right-canal water flows up to the locks at 85/3, that is 85 miles away from the dam. There is a y-junction there. You close the main locks there, and water flows to Buggavagu in Prakasam district.
Guntur farmers on Monday arrived in large numbers at the y-junction. They sought to divert the waters going into the Buggavagu for drinking purposes and to Gundlakammavagu in Guntur for irrigation purposes.
The Prakasam officials have been saying that although they have been supplying the waters to the district for the past 10 days, not even 35% of the tanks in the Prakasam have been filled. Therefore, waters should not be diverted to Guntur.
Guntur officials have, however, quoted irrigation Minister Devineni Nehru as saying that waters be diverted for the Gundlakammavagu. In support of them, Guntur farmers also reached the spot at 85/3 junction.
Owing to tension, Prakasam officials reported the matter to their District Collector Sujata Sarma, who immediately rang up her superior officials.
