Nearly half of women in Delhi faced sexual harassment
Despite the Nirbhaya Act and the consequent alert among the citizens of Delhi, crimes against women are on the rise in the country's capital. As many as 40% of the women in Delhi had faced sexual harassment in the last year. This is the finding of the United Nations-affiliated International Criminal Justice Review.
The criminals harassing women do not wait till dark and commit crimes against women in broad daylight, the study found.
It said the women of Delhi have not been reassured despite the Nirbhaya Act and they still felt insecure. The women's fear was such that they hesitated to go in public. Some women went to the extent of giving up their jobs in the nation's capital!
While women round the world faced sexual harassment, it was a bit more in South Asia.
Equality for women is essential for development of society as a whole. If this aspect was neglected, then what was the Arvind Kejriwal government doing? It maybe noted that soon after the AAP government was voted to power, when the Nirbhaya case verdict was being delivered, the Delhi Chief Minister chose to go a health resort in Bangalore rather than deal with the gender issue.
