KCR bemoans lack of checks on VCs, misuse of autonomy by varsities

Without checks, the Vice-Chancellors of the universities have been acting as they liked. That was why the universities became reckless, Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao said in an angry tone in the State Assembly on Tuesday. He said in the name of autonomy so many things were happening in the universities. For instance, how much land was given for Osmania University when it was started and how much remained with the university today. What the Chief Minister meant to say was that, because of the autonomy, the Vice-Chancellors misused their powers and alienated the lands. KCR said a few more things about the OU. Congress mmber Jeevan Reddy was once a student of the university, and he would know. All this was because there was no government control on the universities. As there was no control and there was autonomy, the Vice-Chancellors were responsible for alienating hundreds of acres under the universities. One must recognise that the autonomy led to misuse and alienation of lands. KCR said to bring back the old glory of the universities, there should be a committee, in which the leader of the opposition should be an important member. He said that his government proposed that judges should don the role of vice-chancellors of universitires. He would appeal to the Chief Justices of the High Courts to nominate the judges who could become Vice-Chancellors of universities.
