Opposition game of sitting over Bills ends as Govt finds Aadhaar

The opposition in Parliament, which has been sitting over important Bills such as the Goods and services Bill, finds its game ended, with the BJP-led NDA government carrying the Aadhaar Bill through the Lok Sabha as finance bill. Besides, the opposition which wanted 2 days extension of the Rajya Sabha session so as to suggest changes to the Aadhaar Bill was negatived by the government. There is another rule that the Rajya Sabha must discusss a money bill within 14 days of being received from the Lower House. Otherwise it is deemed passed. The Rajya Sahba just received the bill and the House would remain open till March 16, when it goes for 39-day recess. In the remaining 2 days are packed farewell to outgoing members, Railway budget discussion and General budget discussion. As a result, there might be no discussion on the Aadhaar Bill as passed by the Lok Sabha. Marxist leader Sitaram Yechury commented that the government, facing the heat of the opposition in the Upper House, bypassed it completely in the Aadhaar Bill. Heat in reality is no synonym for sitting over a law. The Goods and Services Taxes Bill for example, on which an Act of parliament is being sought by many state governments. The Bill has been designed to give greater devolution of funds to the States.
