Kanhaiya files for bail, SC to hear tomorrow
President of Jawaharlal Nehru Central University students union Kanhaiya Kumar, jailed on sedition charges in Tihar, on Thursday moved the Supreme Court for bail which would be heard tomorrow.
Kanhaiya's bail petition was mentioned before a bench of Justices J. Chalameswar and A. M. Sapre by senior advocate Soli J Sorabjee and Raju Ramachandran, who wanted it to be heard today itself. However, when the bench suggested that they would consider it tomorrow, the advocates agreed.
Kanhaiya said in his petition that there was no need for his custodial interrogation, as he had already been sent to judicial custody.
In the petition, filed through advocate Anindita Pujari, the student claimed his innocence and said no purpose would be served by keeping him in the jail, as the police have been finding it difficult to produce him in the court.
Kanhaiya submitted that there was a threat to his life and a need for the apex court to intervene for safeguarding his life and limb.
Earlier, the court regretted the happenings at the Patiala House court in the last 2 days, where the lawyers trained blows on JNU students, teachers, journalists and Kanhaiya amidst stampede. The president of Bar Council of India, Mannan Kumar Mishra, agreed with the court.
Mishra apologised to Kanhaiya and said a three-member committee would be set up to go into the issue. He threatened the guilty lawyers of the Council withdrawing their licences.
