Talaq can be pronounced on social media, says Muslim Board

Talaq delivered through social media such as Skype, Whatsapp, SMS, email and telephone are all valid, according to the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board. Why triple talaq, even a single time utterance of `talaq' could end a Muslim marriage, the AIMPLB has clarified. The Muslim board was reacting to a Supreme Court directive to review the gender-biased talaq issue. The board has said that the Supreme Court's observation calling for examining the Islamic law to do away with discrimination against Muslim women was legally not appropriate. Senior member and spokesperson of the board, Mohammed Abdul Rahul Qureshi, said: "The Supreme court order is legally not appropriate because the Muslim Personal Law is an integral part of the religion. And the right to freedom of religion is a Fundamentl Right guaranteed under Article 25 of the Constitution." Qureshi further said it was necessary to understand the concept of talaq. After talaq, a woman is free to marry another man. It will not make any difference whether you practice triple talaq or single talaq. If a man feels he had made a mistake, he can take back his wife during the iddat (waiting) period. If a woman wants divorce, she can approach the Khula, but talaq is given by man only. The woman has to justify why she wants divorce. She can approach the Imams. Everything in Islam is governed by family. There can be only one head of the family. So it is obvious that the head of the family needs to have liberty. However, statistics say 90% of the Muslim women in India are opposed to the system of talaq. Hence the Supreme Court order for a review of the system.
