Telugu-speaking student commits suicide in US
A Telugu student studying in North Carolina University, Shivkaran Bandi, has committed suicide by hanging owing to curbs being put on Hyderabad-hailing students by the US Immigration authorities. Shivkaran is stated to have been affected by the curbs on students against taking up part-time jobs. Shivkaran's parents stay at Ramantapur in Hyderabad. The recent spate of turning back Telugu-speaking students and the curbs appear to have worked on the student's mind. The Immigration authorities have been sending back students on various grounds, including certain universities not being authorised to admit foreign students. The Immigration authorities were virtually targeting Telugu-speaking students for whatever reasons. The reasons being given are that the students are giving inappropriate answers to the immigration questions, not being able to show adequate funds for US studies, taking up part-time jobs, certain universities as being ineligible to admit foreign students and so on. Shivkaran is stated to have comitted suicide in his hostel room on the campus. While further details of the suicide are awaited, the authorities -- both Indian and US -- are expected to act urgently in the matter, considering Indian students spending huge amounts of money for higher studies in the US.
