Options before Sonia, Rahul: Smooth sail, bail or jail?

With the purview of the National Herald case expanding and spilling into two of the BJP-ruled States of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, the options before the Gandhis are getting narrowed down. The Gandhis have decided to appear before the court on Saturday. Associated Journals Ltd., publishers of The National Herald, had assets in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, which have also allegedly been misused by the Gandhis. Both the BJP-ruled State governments have started probe into the misuse in their respective State. The use of 11-storey Congress Bhavan, which belonged to AJL, in Mumbai has been commercialized. This is the point of probe by the Maharashtra government at the instance of Chief Minister Devendra Phadnavis. Likewise in Bhopal, the one-acre plot that has been allotted to AJL, has also been alienated and a big mall has come up on it. Thus the gross misuse of the largesse of the then Congress governments is clear. This is the burden of BJP leader Subramaniam Swamy's case. Mulling over the details, Congressmen in general are a concerned lot. The Gandhis reportedly told their partymen that they would rather go to jail, if they were sentenced, than to seek bail, if only in order to show highhandedness of the Narendra Modi government. The government contention is that it has nothing to do with a court case.
