On a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Orange Line train on a bridge over the Mystic River on Thursday morning, a loose piece of metal from the train's bottom struck the third rail, started a terrifying fire, and nearly 200 passengers were forced to leave the vehicle. One woman passenger panicked and plunged into the river to save herself, while the majority of other passengers fled through the subway train's windows. According to sources, the train's first car was where the fire and smoke first began to spew out. as it crossed the bridge on its way to Somerville's Assembly station. Online videos showed the train spewing out a massive black cloud of smoke. According to news reports, nobody was injured during the incident. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority reported that orange line services had been restored.
