Introduction
“Raju Weds Rambai” is a film based on a real-life love story from a rural village in undivided Andhra Pradesh, set before the formation of Telangana. Even before its release, the film drew attention when the makers claimed it would present a fresh love story never seen before in Telugu cinema, and the director publicly challenged critics by saying he would hang himself at Ameerpet junction if the film failed to impress. With such statements, expectations naturally rose. Let’s see whether this realistic love story delivers.
Plot Summary
Raju (Akhil Raj), who inherits a family tradition of playing band music at village functions, spends his days roaming around with his friends. He loves Rambai (Tejaswini), who belongs to the same village. Though she initially rejects him, she slowly begins to understand his deep affection and accepts his love. However, Rambai’s father Venkanna (Chaitanya Jonnalagadda) insists on marrying her only to a government employee.
Determined not to compromise, he strictly opposes their relationship. Believing that her father will definitely agree if she becomes pregnant, Raju and Rambai decide to take that step. What happens next? What drastic step does Venkanna take to stop their marriage? The rest of the story unfolds around these questions.
Analysis
Telugu cinema has seen many love stories, including several based on real events. The director here attempts to present another true story from a village backdrop, narrated in the context of honour killings. The climax is designed in a shocking manner, something rarely seen in love stories, and it is clear that the makers placed their full confidence in these final moments.
However, in the remaining portions—scenes, dialogues, screenplay, and character design—the film lacks strong writing. Most characters feel incomplete. A particular dialogue where the heroine says, “If I don’t love you, you beat me; if I love you, my father beats me,” leaves an uncomfortable impression about the hero’s characterization. The heroine’s role appears caught between a foolish lover and an even more foolish father, making her portrayal less appealing.
In one sequence, the hero beating the heroine with a stick simply because she doesn’t answer his call seems unjustifiable and poorly written. Given that the climax focuses heavily on portraying his intense love, it makes one question why the character was shaped in such a harsh manner earlier.
Except for the climax, the film carries little emotional weight. The hero and his friends provide occasional entertainment, but for a film like this, a stronger commercial entertainment angle would have helped. The second half, in particular, feels slow and stretched when compared to the first half. Ultimately, only the climax stands out, and that too may appeal mainly to those who enjoy intense, realistic love stories.
Performances
Akhil Raj as Raju and Tejaswini as Rambai deliver very natural performances. They seamlessly blend into their roles, making their portrayals believable. Chaitanya Jonnalagadda, as Venkanna, appears menacing as the antagonist, though his character lacks proper detailing. The hero’s friends bring authenticity with performances that remind you of typical village gangs.
The director makes an honest attempt to present this real-life story in a rustic and genuine manner. If the emotional thread had been maintained consistently, the film could have been far more impactful. Suresh Bobbili’s music and background score enhance the film’s pace and mood.
Final Verdict
“Raju Weds Rambai” will appeal to audiences who enjoy realistic love stories and emotionally heavy climax sequences. However, its box-office fate depends largely on how the audience responds to its intense climax.
