Introduction
After the success of Masooda, actor Thiruveer appeared in several films but could not score another major hit. This time, he pairs up with popular actress Aishwarya Rajesh in Oh..! Sukumari, a film built around a quirky and unusual concept. Does this entertaining premise translate into an engaging movie? Has Thiruveer finally found a success? Here's the review.
Plot Summary
Yadagiri, also known as Yadi (Thiruveer), is searching for a bride. While visiting a neighboring village for a traditional bride-viewing ceremony, he falls in love at first sight with Damini (Aishwarya Rajesh) and decides that he wants to marry only her.
Interestingly, the villagers are equally eager to get Damini married and send her away because she has a strange condition—anyone who touches her receives an electric shock. This unusual problem has become a headache for everyone in the village. Once Yadi expresses his interest, the villagers quickly arrange the marriage.
The real story begins after the wedding. How does Yadi manage his married life with a wife whose touch gives electric shocks? What challenges does Damini face at her in-laws' house? When and how does Yadi discover the truth about her condition? And what is the actual reason behind his decision to marry Damini? The rest of the film revolves around these questions.
Analysis
In recent Telugu cinema, filmmakers have increasingly built stories around protagonists with bizarre or unusual conditions. Oh..! Sukumari follows the same trend by centering its story on a heroine whose touch causes electric shocks. On paper, the idea of a man unknowingly marrying such a woman and the complications that follow is certainly fresh and has the potential to generate both comedy and emotional drama.
However, an interesting concept alone is not enough. Such a premise demands a well-written screenplay, logical storytelling, and entertaining situations that keep the audience engaged. Unfortunately, the director barely explores the central problem in depth and wraps up the narrative without offering convincing explanations or logical progression.
The first half moves at an average pace, while the second half becomes even more tedious with its routine storytelling. Although several characters try to create comedy, most of the humor falls flat and often becomes repetitive rather than entertaining. Apart from the core concept, there is hardly any freshness in the scenes or dialogues. The film ultimately feels predictable and lacks the strong writing needed to make its unique premise work effectively.
Performances
Thiruveer delivers a sincere performance as the innocent Yadagiri. However, his recent choice of similar roles creates a sense of repetition. It may be beneficial for him to take a break and return with stronger, more distinctive scripts.
Aishwarya Rajesh takes on a unique role, and she performs it convincingly. Despite her committed performance, the weak screenplay and lack of impactful scenes prevent her from fully showcasing her acting abilities.
Jhansi and Muralidhar Goud appear in familiar supporting roles. Comedian Vishnu Kasi makes an effort to generate laughs, but the writing limits the effectiveness of his comedy. Aamani, Srinivas Gavireddy, Anand, and the rest of the supporting cast perform adequately within the scope of their roles.
Technical Aspects
The film's central concept deserves appreciation for attempting something different. However, the execution fails to match its potential. The screenplay lacks depth, the narrative remains routine, and the emotional moments fail to leave an impact. The comedy, which should have been one of the film's strengths, rarely lands. Overall, the writing and direction are the biggest weaknesses, preventing the film from making the most of its promising idea.
Final Verdict
Oh..! Sukumari starts with an interesting and unconventional concept but fails to convert it into an engaging cinematic experience. Routine storytelling, ineffective comedy, weak emotional depth, and an underdeveloped screenplay make the film a test of the audience's patience. While the idea itself is appealing, the execution leaves much to be desired, resulting in a film that disappoints more than it entertains.
