Hyderabad: The Myanmar military conducted airstrikes on a village where opponents of army rule were holding a ceremony on Tuesday. According to a witness, a member of a local pro-democracy group, and independent media, up to 100 individuals were killed, including many children. The military has increasingly used airstrikes to counter an armed struggle against its rule that began in 2021. Since the coup, over 3,000 civilians have been killed by the military. The UN human rights chief, Volker Turk, expressed his horror at the attack in Sagaing, where "schoolchildren performing dances, as well as other civilians, were among the victims." At least 30 children were among those killed in the Sagaing Region attack, according to an emergency worker and an official from the shadow National Unity Government, which considers itself Myanmar's legitimate government. The death toll from the airstrikes is expected to rise.
