A central London district known for its nightlife and residential areas is implementing a new solution to deter public urination. Westminster City Council, which has received complaints from locals, is using anti-pee paint on walls in the area. The paint is a specialized spray-on chemical that creates a water-repellent barrier and sprays back urine when hit, serving as a shock to those who violate the area. The council adopted the idea from a local authority in Germany and has even erected signs at targeted sites warning of the new measure and reminding individuals that "This wall is not a urinal." The council spends an annual amount of nearly $1.24 million for cleaning the streets, including hosing down peed-on side streets. The hope is that this new strategy will not only discourage public urination but also lower cleaning costs.
