In a stunning bank heist that took place in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, on Friday, the burglars used a 10-foot-long tunnel to get access to the State Bank of India (SBI) safe and stole gold worth Rs 1 crore. The tunnel, which was about four feet broad, was allegedly excavated by the burglars from an empty site close to the SBI's Bhanuti branch. Unknown burglars used a gas cutter to open the locker. Both the alarm system and the CCTV camera in the safe were turned off. According to bank officials, the burglars stole roughly 1.8 kg of gold valued about $1 million. Police and forensic experts checking into the 'robbery' found the tunnel, which had been dug from an empty plot near to the bank's safe. Deputy Commissioner of Police for the West Vijay Dhull had reason to believe that a bank insider had also been involved in this crime.
