India gets new CDS after nine months

Lt. General Anil Chauhan (Retd), a former commander of the Eastern Army, was selected as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) by the government on Tuesday. Since the untimely passing of the nation's first CDS Gen. Bipin Rawat in a helicopter crash in December 2021, the position has been vacant.

Lt. Gen. Anil Chauhan had held a number of command, staff, and instrumental positions over the course of his nearly 40-year career and had a wealth of experience in insurgency warfare in Jammu & Kashmir and North-East India.

On December 8, 2021, a helicopter crash claimed the lives of Gen. Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat, and 12 other people.
