The long-cultivated reputation of US President Joe Biden as a champion of human rights has been impacted. In response to his fist bump with the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, Biden has drawn the wrath of some Americans and human rights groups. The image was posted to Twitter by Human Rights executive director Kenneth Roth with the statement, "The autocrats of the globe are smiling." Biden's commitment for human rights, he continued, "may be sold for a trifle of oil." A Washington Post piece that attacked the US President has been circulated widely. Biden promised to 'pariah' Saudi Arabia in 2019 due to its human rights abuses. The gathering took place as global oil supplies became scarce and prices increased as a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The White House replaced Biden's initial 'pariah' commitment with diplomatic realism after he confirmed a trip to Saudi Arabia.
