High tension in Amalapuram about Konaseema district name change
Hundreds of demonstrators thronged Amalapuram, despite police barricades, to oppose the government's proposal to rename the district BR Ambedkar Konaseema. Over the last week, there have been scattered rallies throughout the district opposing the intended move. Despite the limitations and considerable police presence in the town to prevent protesters from gathering, many young people from the area flocked to Amalapuram.
As police attempted to disperse the protesters' rally, tensions rose as officers resorted to lathi-charge, and some protesters reportedly threw stones at police vehicles.Protesters also stormed Minister Vishwaroop Camp's office in Kamanagaru. The office furniture was ruined. Near Vishwaroop's house, RTC buses were wrecked. After much struggle, police took control of the situation.
However, it remained unclear whose organisation or political parties organised a protest march against the district's renaming.
