Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman made numerous major initiatives to assist reduce the burden of rising inflation costs on the average man. Sitharaman stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's office had expressly suggested that all branches of government act with empathy and provide relief to the common man. As part of it, the Centre reduced excise tax on petrol by a record Rs 8 per litre and on diesel by Rs 6 per litre, providing respite to consumers who have been battered by high fuel prices, which have also driven inflation to a record high. After accounting for other taxes, the excise duty fall will result in a reduction of Rs 9.5 per litre of petrol in Delhi and Rs 7 per litre of diesel.
