Surat in Gujarat, is the first city in India to construct a 'steel' road. The road in the city's Hazira industrial area was built with steel waste and is sponsored by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), with assistance from the Ministry of Steel and the NITI Aayog. The road, which is located in Surat, is 1km long and has 6 lanes. It is made entirely of processed steel slag. The project is a part of the 'Waste to Wealth' and 'Clean India' campaign. The viscosity of the road has also been reduced by 30%, according to CSRI. This new method is intended to protect roads from damage during the monsoon season.
