Bail Granted to Bangladeshi Hindu Leader Chinmoy Krishna Das
Chinmoy Krishna Das, a prominent Hindu leader in Bangladesh and the official spokesperson of the Sammilito Sanatani Jagaran Jyot, has been granted bail. The Dhaka High Court issued the bail order on Wednesday in connection with a sedition case filed against him.
The bench, comprising Justice Atowar Rahman and Justice Ali Reza, delivered the verdict following the final hearing in the matter.
Chinmoy Krishna Das had been arrested on November 25 last year at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka by the police under sedition charges. Since then, he had been held in custody. Several Hindu organizations and international bodies had been advocating for his release. Chinmoy Krishna Das is associated with organizations such as the Bangladesh Jatiya Hindu Mahajote (BJHM) and the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON).
Allegations of increased attacks on minorities, particularly Hindus, have emerged in Bangladesh following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government. Reports claim that such incidents have surged since the interim government, led by Mohammad Yunus, assumed charge on August 8. These include assaults, arson, and intimidation targeting homes, temples, and business establishments belonging to minority communities.
In this context, the granting of bail to Chinmoy Krishna Das has taken on added significance.
During the recent BIMSTEC summit held in Bangkok, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reportedly discussed the issue of minority safety with Mohammad Yunus, the head of Bangladesh’s interim government. India has repeatedly expressed concern over the attacks on minorities in the neighboring country.
