Govt Doubles Fishermen Aid Ahead of Fishing Ban in Andhra Pradesh
In a major step towards fulfilling another electoral promise, the coalition government in Andhra Pradesh is launching the ‘Matsyakara Cheyutha’ scheme aimed at providing support to fishermen during the annual fishing ban period. Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu is set to inaugurate the scheme today at Budagatlapalem, a coastal village in Etcherla Mandal of Srikakulam district.

Under this initiative, the financial assistance previously provided to eligible fishermen families has been doubled—from ₹10,000 to ₹20,000 per annum. The state government will deposit a total of ₹258 crore directly into the bank accounts of eligible beneficiaries across the state immediately after the scheme's launch.

The scheme is specifically designed to support fishermen during the 61-day marine fishing ban enforced every year from April 15 to June 14. The primary objective is to provide financial relief to fishermen who lose their livelihood during this period.

According to local reports, members of the fishing community have expressed satisfaction with the government’s move, particularly the decision to disburse the increased financial assistance immediately at the beginning of the ban period. Many conveyed hope that this aid would offer vital support during the two-month period when fishing activities are suspended.

Etcherla MLA Ishwar Rao stated that the Chief Minister’s visit would bring new hope to the lives of fishermen and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing their concerns. Minister Atchannaidu is overseeing the arrangements for the Chief Minister’s tour.
