Mark Carney Slams Trump’s Tariffs, Declares End of Historic U.S.-Canada Friendship
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney strongly reacted to United States President Donald Trump’s recent decision to impose a 25 percent tariff on automobile imports from Canada. Mark Carney declared that the longstanding friendship between the United States and Canada has come to an end. Speaking on Thursday, he stated that the era of economic, security, and military ties between the two nations has concluded.
President Donald Trump’s announcement to impose the 25 percent import tariff on vehicles from Canada is scheduled to come into effect next week. In this context, Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed concern that the decision would harm Canada’s automobile industry, which employs around 500,000 people.
Mark Carney described Trump’s automobile tariffs as “unfair” and stated that they violate existing trade agreements between the two countries. He asserted that Trump had permanently altered the relationship with the United States and emphasized that Canada would not back down in any future trade negotiations.
The Prime Minister said Canada would retaliate against the auto tariffs. “We will counter the superpower’s tariffs with our own retaliatory trade actions that have maximum impact on America and minimal impact on Canada,” said Mark Carney.
It may be recalled that Mark Carney was appointed Prime Minister on March 14, replacing Justin Trudeau. Traditionally, a newly appointed Canadian leader speaks with the U.S. President shortly after taking office. However, Mark Carney and Donald Trump have not yet spoken.
Although Mark Carney stated he is willing to speak with President Trump, he made it clear that he would not engage in trade negotiations until the U.S. President shows respect toward Canada, particularly by ending his repeated merger threats.
