BC Reservations and SC Classification: CM Revanth Reddy Makes Key Announcement in Assembly

BC Reservations and SC Classification: CM Revanth Reddy Makes Key Announcement in Assembly
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy announced in the state assembly that Backward Classes (BCs) would be allocated 42% of seats in both political and local body elections. He urged all political parties to follow the same policy and allocate 42% of their tickets to BC candidates. The announcement was made during a discussion on social, economic, and caste-based census data in the assembly.

The Chief Minister stated that the caste survey had been divided into four parts. While the first three parts were being presented in the assembly, the fourth part, which contains personal information of citizens, could not be disclosed due to privacy laws.

Revanth Reddy revealed that a total of 3.54 crore people participated in the survey. According to the data, the total BC population in Telangana, categorized under A, B, C, D, and E groups, stands at 56.33%. He pointed out that the previous government had projected the population of Other Castes (OCs) as over 20%, whereas the current survey indicates that their population is only 15%. The BC population, which was recorded at 51% in the previous government’s survey, has now increased to 56% in the latest caste survey, he added.

The Chief Minister criticized the previous government, alleging that it conducted surveys through contract workers. He questioned why the previous Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government had kept its comprehensive family survey confidential and why former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao did not present the survey results in the assembly.

Revanth Reddy asserted that the new caste survey showed an increase in the percentages of Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and BCs compared to the previous government’s data.

CM’s Statement on SC Classification

Revanth Reddy also made an important announcement regarding the classification of Scheduled Castes (SCs). He stated that the SC Classification Commission had identified 59 sub-castes among the SC community. The commission recommended dividing them into three groups and distributing the existing 15% SC reservation among these groups.

According to the commission's recommendations:

Group 1, consisting of 15 SC sub-castes, should receive 1% reservation
Group 2, with 18 SC sub-castes, should be allotted 9% reservation
Group 3, comprising 26 SC sub-castes, should get 5% reservation

Revanth Reddy provided details on the population distribution of these groups:

Group 1: 3.288% of the SC population
Group 2: 62.748% of the SC population
Group 3: 33.963% of the SC population

These announcements mark a significant step in Telangana’s approach to caste-based reservations and representation in elections.
