Non-communicable diseases cause 74% of global deaths, says WHO report

Hyderabad: Since the outbreak of Corona, people have been gripped by the fear of infectious diseases. Until recently, people were scared of venturing out fearing that they may contract the virus. But in the latest study by the World Health Organisation (WHO) shocking facts have come to light.

It has been found that non-communicable diseases (NCD) cause more deaths in the world than infectious diseases. Four crore people die every year due to heart attacks, cancer, diabetes and respiratory diseases. On September 21, WHO released its latest report.

There are 74 non-communicable diseases like heart disease, cancer and diabetes in the world. Diseases transmitted from one generation to another are more dangerous than infectious diseases, WHO said. In all, 41 million people die each year due to non-communicable diseases. It is known that 17 million of them are under the age of 70 years. It has been found that heart diseases, cancer, diabetes and respiratory diseases have overcome infectious diseases. 

Bente Mikkelsen, head of the World Health Organisation's division that monitors such diseases, said in Geneva that one person under the age of 70 dies every two seconds in the world due to to non-communicable diseases. According to the World Health Organisation report, those suffering from non-communicable diseases like obesity and diabetes are at a higher risk of becoming seriously ill and dying.
