Is Centre considering new project at Dowleswaram to increase flood discharge: MP Margani Bharat

Delhi, July 21: In the ongoing monsoon session of the Parliament, Margani Bharat, YSRCP MP from Rajahmundry, on Thursday sought clarification from the Central government in the Lok Sabha regarding construction of a new project at Dowleswaram in East Godavari district to increase discharge of water from Godavari river during floods.

The MP brought to the notice of the Central government that Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage at Dowleswaram has maximum discharge capacity of 36 lakh cusecs. “Several villages and islands submerged as Polavaram discharged 50 lakh cusecs of water into Dowleswaram Barrage due to recent record floods in Godavari,” he mentioned.

Responding, Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat stated that the Centre did not receive any proposal from the AP government for construction of the new project at Dowleswaram. However, the Central government will take a decision on new project based on technical feasibility after receiving proposal from the state government.
