Key Decision by Central Government on Caste Census

The central government has taken a significant decision regarding the conduct of a caste census in the country. It has clarified that details related to castes will also be collected along with the upcoming nationwide population census. This was disclosed by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw while briefing the media after the Union Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday.

The minister stated that the government has resolved to record caste-wise data as part of the official national population enumeration process. This move indicates the central government’s clear stance on a matter that has been under public and political discussion for a long time.

Ashwini Vaishnaw also addressed the ongoing caste surveys being independently conducted by some state governments. Referring specifically to the surveys undertaken under the leadership of the Congress party, he stated that the Centre believed there was a lack of transparency in those exercises. His remarks suggested that the central government is dissatisfied with the methodologies adopted by certain states in conducting these caste-based surveys.
