Justice B.R. Gavai Appointed as the Chief Justice of India
Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai has been appointed as the next Chief Justice of India following the impending retirement of current Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna. President Droupadi Murmu has formally approved the appointment.

Justice Sanjiv Khanna will retire from his position on May 13. Justice B.R. Gavai is scheduled to take oath as the 52nd Chief Justice of India on May 14. The announcement was officially made by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, who stated, “The appointment of Justice B.R. Gavai marks a significant step for the Indian judiciary. He is renowned for his excellence and impartiality in the field of law.”

However, Justice B.R. Gavai is expected to serve in this role for only about six months, as he is due for retirement in November this year. He was elevated to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019, and has since been involved in several important cases and verdicts in the apex court.

Justice Gavai was born on November 24, 1960, in Amravati, Maharashtra. His father, the late R.S. Gavai, was a prominent social activist and also served as Governor of states including Bihar and Kerala. Justice Gavai began his judicial career on November 14, 2003, when he was appointed an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court. He was made a Permanent Judge on November 12, 2005. Prior to his elevation to the Supreme Court, he served as a judge across benches in Mumbai, Nagpur, Aurangabad, and Panaji for over 15 years in the Bombay High Court.
