Pahalgam Terror Attack: Seven Stern Measures India Has Taken Against Pakistan
In the aftermath of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 tourists lost their lives, the Government of India has launched a series of stringent actions against Pakistan. Alleging Pakistan’s involvement in the attack, India has so far implemented seven decisive measures, with five initiated on Wednesday and two additional actions taken on Thursday, following deliberations over border-related issues linked to the attack.
Here are the seven stern actions India has taken against Pakistan in response to the Pahalgam terror attack:
India has immediately revoked the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960. The government announced that this suspension would continue until Pakistan credibly ends its support for cross-border terrorism.
The Attari Integrated Check Post was shut down on Wednesday. Individuals who crossed over with valid endorsements will be allowed to return via this route before May 1.
The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES) has been suspended. Pakistani nationals will no longer be allowed to travel to India under these visas. Previously issued SVES visas to Pakistani nationals have been cancelled, and those currently in India under this scheme have been ordered to leave the country within 48 hours.
India has declared the defence, naval, and air advisors at the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi as persona non grata, granting them one week to leave the country. Additionally, India has announced it will withdraw its own defence personnel from the High Commission in Islamabad.
The Government of India stated that by May 1, it would reduce the total number of officials at both High Commissions from the current 55 to 30.
On Thursday, the Indian government announced an immediate suspension of all visa services for Pakistani nationals. All Pakistani citizens currently in India have been directed to leave by April 27. However, those holding medical visas are permitted to stay until April 29.
The Border Security Force (BSF) has decided to scale down the ceremonial retreat events held at Attari, Hussainiwala, and Sadiqi in Punjab. As part of this, the customary handshake between the Indian Guard Commander and his Pakistani counterpart will be suspended. During these ceremonies, the gates will remain closed, underscoring India's grave concerns over hostilities at the border.
