Legend Announces Lifetime Financial Aid to Vinod Kambli

Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has extended a helping hand to former cricketer Vinod Kambli, who is battling severe financial difficulties and health issues. Moved by Kambli’s plight, Gavaskar has announced lifetime financial assistance through his ‘Champions Foundation.’
During the 50th anniversary celebrations of Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium held recently, Sunil Gavaskar met Vinod Kambli. Reports indicate that Kambli appeared visibly frail during the event, which deeply disturbed Gavaskar. He immediately arranged for medical consultation and gathered detailed information about Kambli’s health condition.
Following this, Gavaskar directed his foundation to provide Kambli with a monthly financial aid of ₹30,000 starting from April 1, 2025. In addition, he instructed that an annual grant of ₹30,000 be extended for medical expenses.
Once a key left-handed batter for the Indian team, Vinod Kambli has been suffering from serious health problems for some time. He was recently hospitalized due to urinary infections and a blood clot in the brain. Post-retirement, Kambli has struggled to achieve financial stability. His primary source of income has been the pension received from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Established in 1999, Gavaskar’s ‘Champions Foundation’ has consistently provided assistance to former international athletes in need. Speaking on the support extended to Kambli, Gavaskar said, “Along with the 1983 World Cup-winning team members, I believe it is our responsibility to support cricketers like Kambli who are facing hardships due to misfortune.” He further stated that the intention is not only to provide financial aid but also to help Kambli regain stability.
Vinod Kambli, who played 17 Tests and 104 One Day Internationals for India between 1991 and 2000, set several records during his career. However, injuries and other factors led to its early conclusion. Expressing his gratitude, Kambli said that the support extended by Gavaskar during this difficult time was like a “ray of hope.” His story once again highlights the challenges faced by retired athletes and the importance of a robust support system.
