Heavy Rain and Hailstorm Ravage Crops Across Multiple Telangana Districts

Unseasonal rains and hailstorms across Telangana have severely impacted farmers, with crops ready for harvest being destroyed and paddy brought to markets swept away by floods. On Sunday, heavy rains damaged crops across more than 10,000 acres in the districts of Jangaon, Siddipet, Nalgonda, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Khammam, and Bhadradri Kothagudem. In several villages, mangoes and paddy grains fell prematurely due to the hailstorms.
Unseasonal rainfall has been affecting the state since the last week of the previous month. According to a report submitted to the state government by the Department of Agriculture, over 50,000 acres of crops have been damaged due to these rains. Specifically, the report stated that rainfall between the end of March and April 2 alone caused damage to crops across more than 8,000 acres.
In response, the government has decided to provide compensation of ₹10,000 per acre to affected farmers. For the crop losses caused by rains after April 2, officials are currently conducting a survey. Based on the forthcoming report, compensation is likely to be announced on April 25.
With the Meteorological Department forecasting continued rainfall until the end of the month, many farmers are postponing the harvesting of their paddy crops.
