Viral Video Shows Shreyas Iyer’s Reaction to Maxwell’s DRS Call

In a key IPL 2025 match held on Saturday at Uppal between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings, Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer expressed visible anger towards one of his bowlers, Glenn Maxwell. A video capturing this incident has gone viral on social media. Many netizens, however, have commented that Shreyas Iyer’s frustration was justified.
The incident occurred during Sunrisers Hyderabad’s chase of a formidable target, with their batsmen playing aggressively. Openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head had taken the crease. During this phase, Glenn Maxwell delivered a ball to Travis Head, who attempted a shot but missed. The ball passed the bat and went directly into the wicketkeeper’s gloves. Maxwell immediately appealed for a catch behind. However, the on-field umpire ruled it as a wide delivery.
Without any hesitation, Glenn Maxwell opted for a Decision Review System (DRS) appeal. The umpire approved the review and referred the decision to the third umpire.
This move by Glenn Maxwell appeared to upset Shreyas Iyer. In the video, Shreyas Iyer can be seen clearly showing anger towards Maxwell for initiating a DRS appeal without consulting him first. The captain’s frustration indicated that he believed he should have been asked before proceeding with the review. After the incident, Shreyas Iyer himself signaled for the review.
According to IPL regulations, a DRS review can only be taken if the fielding team’s captain makes the request. Fans have since criticized the fact that the third umpire accepted the review simply on Maxwell’s appeal without verifying the captain’s consent.
