Former BRS MLA Shakeel Detained at Hyderabad Airport

Former Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) legislator Shakeel was arrested by police on Thursday upon his arrival at the Hyderabad airport from Dubai. Authorities had already issued an arrest warrant against Shakeel in connection with an earlier attempt to shield his son from legal action related to a road accident.

Police officials stated that Shakeel had travelled to Dubai and remained there for an extended period after learning of the legal proceedings initiated against him. Shakeel returned to India on Thursday morning to attend the funeral of his mother. Based on prior intelligence about his travel plans, police were present at the Hyderabad airport and took him into custody immediately upon his arrival.

The case stems from a 2023 incident in which Shakeel’s son, Raheel, was allegedly driving a car at high speed and caused an accident near Pragathi Bhavan. Following the incident, a police case was filed. Authorities allege that Shakeel misled the police in order to protect his son and subsequently arranged for Raheel to be sent to Dubai.

Investigations revealed that Shakeel had actively assisted in both facilitating his son’s escape and evading legal consequences. Based on this, police filed a case against Shakeel and issued an arrest warrant. Upon learning of the developments, Shakeel also reportedly left for Dubai, where he stayed for a considerable duration.

Police sources confirmed that Shakeel was granted permission to participate in his mother's funeral under police supervision. He is expected to be transferred to a police station after the completion of the funeral rites.
