Woman, 30, Marries 18-Year-Old Student After Converting to Hinduism

A peculiar incident has surfaced in the Amroha district of Uttar Pradesh. A 30-year-old woman, a mother of three, converted to Hinduism and married an 18-year-old boy, a Class 12 student, in a temple ceremony. The woman’s relationship with a boy twelve years her junior has sparked intense discussion in the local area.
According to Hasanpur Circle Officer Deep Kumar Pant, the woman, originally named Shabnam, adopted the name Shivani after embracing Hinduism. She has no living parents and has previously been married twice.
Shivani’s first marriage took place in Meerut, which later ended in divorce. Subsequently, she married a man named Taufiq from Saidanwale village. In 2011, Taufiq was rendered disabled following a road accident. Over time, Shivani developed a relationship with the 18-year-old student currently in Class 12.
Last Friday, Shabnam formally divorced Taufiq. Following the divorce, she converted to Hinduism and changed her name to Shivani. Soon after, she married the 18-year-old in a temple ceremony.
Speaking to reporters, the father of the Class 12 student stated that he supports his son’s decision. “As long as they are happy together, we have no objection. We just wish them a peaceful and contented life,” he said.
It is noteworthy that the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act is currently in force. Under this law, forced or fraudulent religious conversions are deemed a criminal offense. Authorities are presently reviewing the circumstances surrounding the marriage, though no official complaints have been lodged so far.
