Are you buying gold and want to make sure it's genuine? With so many options in the market, verifying the authenticity of hallmarked gold is essential to ensure you're getting what you pay for. In India, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has introduced a hallmarking system that certifies gold purity and protects buyers from fraud.  

But how can you check if your gold jewelry is truly hallmarked? From identifying key hallmark components to using the BIS CARE app for verification, here’s a simple guide to help you confirm the authenticity of your gold before making a purchase.

1. Look for key components of the hallmark. A genuine hallmark consists of three essential elements: the BIS logo (a triangular mark indicating BIS certification), the purity and fineness mark (such as 22K916 or 24K999), and the Hallmark Unique Identification Number (HUID), a six-digit alphanumeric code introduced in 2023 to track jewelry authenticity.  

2. Use the BIS CARE app. Download the BIS CARE app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, enter the HUID number found on your jewelry, and verify its authenticity. The app provides details about the jeweler, the assaying center, and the purity certification.  

3. Inspect physically. Use a magnifying glass to carefully check the hallmark on your jewelry. Ensure all markings, including the BIS logo, purity level, and HUID, are clearly visible and match the seller’s claims.  

4. Verify with a trusted jeweler. If in doubt, take your gold to a BIS-certified jeweler or goldsmith for a professional assessment.  

5. Avoid fake hallmarks. Counterfeit hallmarks exist, so always buy from BIS-registered jewelers to ensure you’re getting certified gold.
