Javed Akhtar Supports Mohammad Shami Amid Ramadan Fasting Controversy
Indian fast bowler Mohammad Shami has found himself at the center of controversy after he was seen consuming an energy drink during a Champions Trophy match against Australia. This incident has sparked outrage among some Muslim clerics, as the ongoing month of Ramadan is considered sacred by followers of Islam, who observe fasting during this period.

All India Muslim Jamaat national president Maulana Shahabuddin Rizvi Barelvi criticized Shami, stating that the cricketer violated religious norms by not observing the fast. Rizvi alleged, “Shami has broken religious rules and is a sinner.”

Despite the criticism, Shami has received widespread support both on social media and within the cricketing community. Many netizens defended him, asserting that he had done nothing wrong. Former cricketer Harbhajan Singh also weighed in on the matter, urging people not to mix cricket with religion.

Renowned Bollywood lyricist Javed Akhtar also extended his support to Shami, addressing the controversy on social media. “Shami Sahab, do not pay attention to the words of ignorant people who will criticize you no matter what. Even drinking water in the scorching heat of a Dubai stadium seems to be a problem for them. Just ignore them. This matter is not even related to them. You are a proud member of the great Team India. My heartfelt wishes to you and the entire team,” Akhtar wrote.
