Congress Leader Shama’s Remarks on Rohit Sharma Trigger Political Backlash
Congress spokesperson Shama Mohammed has sparked controversy with her remarks on Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma. She stated that Rohit Sharma is overweight and that his performances are unimpressive. According to her, he is the most underwhelming captain in India's history and needs to lose weight. Her comments, made on social media, have triggered political backlash, with both BJP leaders and cricket fans condemning her statements.
A social media user praised Rohit Sharma as a "world-class player." In response, Shama Mohammed dismissed the claim, questioning his stature compared to Indian cricket legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Kapil Dev. "What world-class? He is an ordinary captain. Just a regular player who was fortunate to become Team India’s captain," she remarked.
Reacting swiftly, the BJP criticized her comments, questioning how she could speak this way about a World Cup-winning captain. The party condemned her for body-shaming and advised against making such remarks. Radhika Khera, a former Congress leader who joined the BJP, expressed her anger, stating that Congress has a long history of disrespecting sportspersons. She also attacked Rahul Gandhi, claiming that while Rohit Sharma is leading his team towards World Cup success, Rahul Gandhi cannot even unite his own party and is causing internal chaos.
Khera further urged senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh to focus on Congress’s credibility, election strategies, and principles instead of targeting a cricketer who has brought pride to the nation.
