Install CCTV Cameras in All Police Stations: Key Orders from AP High Court
The Andhra Pradesh High Court has directed the state government to install CCTV cameras in all police stations across the state. The court questioned why, out of the total 1,392 police stations, only 1,001 had CCTV cameras installed. It further sought an explanation for the absence of cameras in the remaining stations.
Citing the Supreme Court’s guidelines, the High Court ordered the installation of CCTV cameras in all police stations. Additionally, it instructed the submission of a report on the functionality of the existing cameras in police stations. The court also mandated a report on the performance of CCTV cameras installed in prisons.
Previously, the High Court had conducted hearings on the issue of CCTV cameras in police stations and prisons, directing their installation. However, despite the cameras being installed, many were found to be non-functional due to maintenance and technical issues. This led to the filing of a contempt petition in the High Court, alleging a lack of progress in implementing the Supreme Court’s directives.
Upon reviewing the petition, the High Court issued fresh orders, reiterating the necessity of CCTV surveillance in all police stations.
