Shreyas Iyer's Champions Trophy Spot Leads to Rift Between Gambhir and Agarkar
The Indian cricket team, buoyed by a clean sweep in the three-match ODI series against England, is gearing up for its opening match of the Champions Trophy against Bangladesh in Dubai on February 20. However, recent reports reveal a heated disagreement between head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar over team selection, particularly regarding Shreyas Iyer’s inclusion.
During the England series, KL Rahul played all three ODIs, while backup wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant did not get a single opportunity. Agarkar reportedly advocated for Pant’s inclusion in the playing XI, asserting that the primary wicketkeeper’s role belonged to him. In contrast, Gambhir publicly stated that Rahul was the team’s first-choice wicketkeeper, raising questions about Pant’s place in the squad. Gambhir firmly argued that playing two wicketkeepers was not a viable option, emphasizing Rahul’s strong performances.
Pant’s chances of securing a spot in the XI have also been hindered by the team’s preference for a left-handed batter in the middle order. Axar Patel has often been sent ahead in the batting lineup, making it difficult for Pant to break in. Axar has been in good form, scoring 52 and 41 runs in the first two ODIs against England and playing a crucial role in last year’s T20 World Cup final.
Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer has also impressed, scoring 181 runs in the three ODIs against England. Despite his strong performance, Agarkar was reportedly against his selection for both the England series and the Champions Trophy. However, Gambhir is believed to have insisted on including Iyer, ultimately securing his place in the squad. This disagreement over Iyer's selection is said to have led to the confrontation between Gambhir and Agarkar.
