Two Friends Sleep Without Turning Off Gas Stove, Tragic Incident Unfolds

Two friends, Upendra (22) and Shivam (23), who ran a street food stall selling ‘Chole Bhature’ and ‘Kulche’ in Noida’s Sector 70, tragically lost their lives due to carbon monoxide poisoning. The incident occurred late Friday night when the two, who lived in a rented accommodation, fell asleep without turning off the gas stove after boiling chickpeas in preparation for the next day’s business.

According to Rajeev Gupta, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Noida Central Zone, both friends had closed the doors and windows of the room before going to sleep. During the night, harmful fumes filled the enclosed space as the vessel boiled dry, emitting dangerous gases. This caused a significant increase in carbon monoxide levels, while oxygen levels plummeted, leading to their deaths due to asphyxiation.

Rajeev Gupta further explained that the toxic smoke deprived both individuals of oxygen. Neighbors noticed smoke coming out of the room and broke open the door, only to find the duo unconscious. They were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival. Police confirmed that there were no visible injuries on their bodies, and the remains have been sent for postmortem examination.

Experts warn that carbon monoxide, a colorless and odorless poisonous gas, is produced when fuels are burned in devices like stoves, ovens, generators, and vehicles. In tightly closed spaces, the concentration of this gas can rise rapidly, posing a fatal risk.
