Chinese Virus HMPV Detected in Bengaluru, Eight-Month-Old Baby Infected

The Karnataka government has confirmed the detection of a new virus, Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), in India, following its identification in an eight-month-old baby from Bengaluru. The virus, which had previously been confined to China and Japan, was detected in a medical test conducted at a private laboratory, according to state health officials. Concerns have grown among the medical community as this marks the first reported case of HMPV in the country.

Officials from the Karnataka Health Department stated that the source of the infection remains unknown, and efforts are underway to understand how the virus was transmitted to the child. Furthermore, the specific strain of HMPV in this case is proving difficult for medical experts to analyze.

HMPV typically presents flu-like symptoms, including cough, cold, and fever, with children under the age of 11 being the most vulnerable, according to Chinese medical experts. Recently, there has been a sharp surge in HMPV cases in China, prompting the government to impose restrictions in some regions to curb the spread. The virus has also spread to Japan, raising further concerns about its potential global transmission.
