China Responds to Reports of a New Virus Outbreak

China has dismissed recent reports suggesting that hospitals in the country are overcrowded due to a new virus called Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). The Chinese Foreign Ministry clarified that there is no truth to these claims, stating that the severity of respiratory diseases during winter is natural and, in fact, less intense compared to the previous year.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized that there is no reason for foreigners to worry about visiting China, assuring that the country remains safe. She added that the government is committed to safeguarding the health of both Chinese citizens and foreign nationals residing in the country. Additionally, Mao Ning highlighted that China's National Disease Control and Prevention guidelines have been issued to manage and control respiratory diseases during the winter season.

Medical experts have stated that the symptoms of HMPV are similar to flu and other respiratory infections. The incubation period for the virus is believed to be three to six days. According to doctors, HMPV spreads through droplets from coughing or sneezing, close contact with infected individuals, handshakes, or touching contaminated surfaces. Children and the elderly are considered more susceptible to the virus.

HMPV was first identified in 2001. Currently, there is no vaccine or specific treatment for this virus. Medical care is primarily focused on alleviating symptoms.
